ISLAMABAD: At least seven people were killed and one injured whenterrorists attacked the office of the Howaid Peace Committee in Bannudistrict of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, police and local officialsconfirmed.
The assailants targeted the peace committee office located in Howaid areaof Bannu late Thursday night, opening indiscriminate fire that led toimmediate casualties among committee members and guards present at the site.
Security forces quickly reached the spot and cordoned off the entire area.A heavy contingent of police remains deployed as the situation continues tobe tense in and around Howaid.
The bodies of the deceased and the injured person were shifted to DistrictHeadquarters Hospital Bannu where medico-legal formalities are underway.Hospital sources said one victim is in critical condition.
Police have registered a case and launched a full investigation. Initialreports suggest the attackers managed to flee under the cover of darkness,prompting a search operation in surrounding areas.
The attack comes amid heightened security operations against militantgroups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier this week, security forces eliminatedtwenty-three Khawarij militants, including key commander Sajjad alias AbuZar, in separate intelligence-based operations across the province.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the Bannu assault, butauthorities suspect involvement of outlawed militant networks active in theregion.
