ISLAMABAD: India has launched an extensive programme to protect its majorcities and strategic installations from potential drone attacks originatingfrom Pakistan, defence sources and security analysts have confirmed. TheIndian Army, Air Force and Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) are rapidly deploying integrated counter-unmanned aerial systems(C-UAS) across northern and western sectors, with particular emphasis onDelhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jammu, Pathankot and border towns in Punjab andRajasthan.

According to reports published by the Indian Defence Research Wing (IDRW),the Ministry of Defence has approved emergency procurement of additionallaser-based directed energy weapons, radio-frequency jammers andnet-enabled drone capture systems. The accelerated acquisition followsrepeated incidents of suspected Pakistani-origin drones dropping weaponsand narcotics along the Line of Control and International Border over thepast eighteen months. Military observers note that while most intrusionshave targeted security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, intelligenceassessments warn of a possible shift toward high-value civilian andeconomic targets inside Indian territory.

The counter-drone grid now includes indigenous systems such as theDRDO-developed D4 (Detect, Track, Deter and Destroy) architecture andIsraeli-supplied SMASH 2000 Plus smart shooters. Recent trials ofvehicle-mounted high-power microwave devices capable of neutralising droneswarms at ranges exceeding five kilometres have been declared successful, prompting immediate induction along the western front.

Defence experts interpret the buildup as a clear signal to Islamabad thatany attempt to replicate the Azerbaijan-Armenia model of drone warfareagainst Indian cities would meet sophisticated resistance. The measuresalso reflect growing Indian concern over Pakistan’s expanding inventory ofTurkish Bayraktar TB2 and Chinese Wing Loong platforms, alongsidedomestically produced Burraq and Shahpar series.

While both countries maintain official spokespersons have refrained fromdirect comment, the timing coincides with heightened diplomatic frictionover Kashmir and recent cross-border firing incidents.
