Pakistan, China Reaffirm Strategic Cooperation in Arms Control Dialogue

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China convened the 10th round of Bilateral Consultations on Arms Control, Non-Proliferation, and Disarmament on Monday in Beijing, the Foreign Office said on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the two sides held an in-depth exchange of views on global and regional peace and security, including the situation in South Asia and challenges to strategic stability.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Ambassador Tahir Andrabi, Additional Secretary for Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Chinese side was headed by Sun Xiaobo, Director General of the Department of Arms Control at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Talks covered a broad spectrum of disarmament and non-proliferation issues, including matters on the agenda of the UN General Assembly First Committee, the Conference on Disarmament, and key international treaties such as the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The implications of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence for security were also discussed.

The two sides further explored avenues for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and outer space.

During his visit, Ambassador Andrabi also attended an interactive roundtable organized by the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA), which brought together diplomats, academics, and policy experts.

“The Pakistan-China Dialogue on Arms Control, Non-Proliferation, and Disarmament is an important component of the broader strategic partnership between the two countries,” the Foreign Office spokesperson said, noting that Pakistan regards the forum as a vital platform for meaningful consultations on security, arms control, and stability.
