Pakistan Targets Trillion-Dollar Economy With AI-Powered Initiative

The Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives (MoPDSI) on Monday launched the URAAN AI Techathon 1.0 under its flagship URAAN Pakistan initiative, aimed at mobilising youth and professionals to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to real-world challenges.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal called the Techathon a “national call” to inspire students, developers, entrepreneurs, and thinkers to create innovative AI-driven solutions. He stressed that the program is part of the URAAN Pakistan National Innovation Mission, aligned with Vision 2025, the National AI Policy, and sectoral strategies.

“This is not just a competition—it is a movement to empower our youth and transform key sectors of the economy,” Iqbal remarked, highlighting how AI is already reshaping healthcare, education, agriculture, industry, governance, and climate response. “Pakistan cannot afford to remain a bystander in the global AI revolution.”

The minister also announced the launch of a dedicated online portal for registrations, resources, and communication, ensuring inclusive participation from underserved and remote regions. He added that the government is integrating AI into curricula, expanding training programs, mentorship, and establishing Centres of Excellence to build national capacity.

Underscoring the role of startups, universities, and technology parks in shaping a robust AI ecosystem, Iqbal said initiatives like the Techathon will prepare Pakistan to advance toward a trillion-dollar economy by 2035. He urged the youth to bring forward ideas and creativity that can compete on the global stage.
