Islamabad, August 15, 2025 — As the Asia Cup 2025 and a Tri-Nation T20 series loom closer, concerns are mounting within Pakistan’s cricketing circles over the continued omission of two of its biggest names, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, from the squad due to a sustained slump in form.
Reports suggest that the PCB is contemplating dropping both players from the Asia Cup lineup and upcoming tri-series following a demoralizing 202-run defeat to West Indies in the ODI decider. Their poor recent performances and subdued strike rates are said to have triggered serious doubts among selectors.
Babar Azam’s ODI form is under harsh scrutiny. Over 11 ODIs this year, he has managed just 334 runs at an average of 30.36, with no significant innings, fueling apprehension about his ability to anchor the batting attack.
With the Asia Cup fast approaching on September 9, Pakistan is set to play a tri-series involving Afghanistan and UAE in Sharjah, a key test before the continental tournament. Rising players and fitness uncertainties among senior stars make squad selection even more critical.
Criticism is mounting domestically. Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar publicly questioned when the seasoned duo would deliver match-winning performances, reflecting broader frustration over their inability to deliver under pressure.
Not all hope is lost, however. Legendary pacer Wasim Akram has strongly advocated for Babar, despite his recent form, citing his experience and ability to anchor chases in pressure situations. “If I had the authority, I would definitely include Babar Azam,” Akram affirmed, stressing the need for a senior batter in key tournaments ahead.
The final squad announcement is expected by mid-to-late August, and the upcoming tri-series in Sharjah may serve as the final audition for the struggling stars. With the Asia Cup featuring marquee matchups, including the high-profile clash against India on September 14, selectors face mounting pressure to balance experience with form and tempo.
