Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed that an eco-friendly electricity project in Gilgit-Baltistan be completed within one year.
According to ARY News, a review meeting on the 100 MW solar project in Gilgit-Baltistan was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The Prime Minister instructed that the project be completed within a year and stated that he would personally oversee its progress.
The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Owais Khan Laghari, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Musharraf Zaidi, renewable energy expert Dr. Gerwin Dreesmann, and other senior officials, who briefed the Prime Minister on the progress and action plan for the project.
It was informed during the meeting that under the project, 6 solar parks will be built in Gilgit, 8 in Skardu, and 6 in Diamer. Additionally, solar installations will be ensured on 234 buildings in Gilgit, 179 in Skardu, and 68 in Diamer.
The meeting was told that to bring the project up to international standards, batteries will be installed to ensure backup power, and a real-time monitoring system will also be implemented.
The Prime Minister had announced the 100 MW solar plant during his recent visit to Gilgit-Baltistan. It was noted that following approval from the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), construction work on the project has been accelerated.
Shehbaz Sharif assigned the chairmanship of the steering committee overseeing the project to Federal Minister for Power Sardar Owais Khan Laghari.
Addressing the meeting, the Prime Minister said that the project is extremely important to eliminate darkness in Gilgit. All costs for the project will be borne by the federal government, and the entire infrastructure will be made climate-resilient.
He added that the project will provide the people of Gilgit-Baltistan with low-cost and eco-friendly electricity, freeing them from 18 to 20 hours of load-shedding.
