Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has unveiled a comprehensive plan to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into its higher education system, with the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Mardan’s AI Center officially designated as the provincial hub for AI initiatives.
In a formal communication to UET Mardan’s Vice Chancellor, the Higher Education Department tasked the university with leading AI-related programs and activities across the province. The initiative will include specialized AI training workshops for students and faculty, as well as the development of AI tools within universities. Authorities have also directed that fees for AI programs remain minimal to ensure affordability and accessibility for all students.
The move is part of a broader vision led by Chief Minister KP and Minister for Higher Education, Archives, and Libraries, Mr. Meena Khan. In a recent high-level meeting—attended by UET Mardan Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Gul Muhammad Khan, Special Secretary Mr. Ghulam Saeed, and Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman, Advisor/Director General—officials discussed both short-term and long-term strategies to bring the province’s higher education sector in line with global standards.
To facilitate the transition, the Centre for AI at UET Mardan will develop a province-wide AI adoption framework to be implemented by all higher education institutions starting next semester. Plans are also underway to hold summer training camps for faculty to prepare them for AI-integrated teaching methods.
An official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Higher Education Department and the Centre for AI will soon be signed to formalize the action plan and ensure its timely execution.
