An active shooter incident at Fort Stewart military base in Georgia on Wednesday left five U.S. soldiers injured, according to Army officials. The suspected gunman has been apprehended.
The injured personnel were initially treated on-site before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital for further medical care, the base confirmed in a statement posted to Facebook.
Fort Stewart was placed on lockdown following reports of gunfire within the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. Authorities responded at approximately 10:56 a.m. ET, with the lockdown initiated around 11:04 a.m. The suspect was arrested by 11:35 a.m., the statement said.
“There is no active threat to the community,” officials assured.
The 3rd Infantry Division, headquartered at Fort Stewart, posted an alert on X (formerly Twitter), instructing all personnel to remain indoors and secure all windows and doors during the incident.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed sorrow over the shooting, writing on X: “We are saddened by today’s tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all who serve.”
Former President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation and is actively monitoring developments, according to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
