Pakistan to install modern surveillance radars across the country

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has announced plans to purchasemodern surveillance radars for installation across various parts of thecountry, according to a report by ARY News on Monday. This initiative aimsto enhance weather monitoring capabilities through the deployment ofadvanced equipment.

According to the details, five fixed surveillance radars will be installedin different regions of the country, complemented by three portable radarsand 300 automatic weather stations in various cities. The fixed radars areset to be installed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Cherat, Dera Ismail Khan,Quetta, Gwadar, and Lahore. Karachi, which already has a functioning radarstation, will not receive a new installation.

In addition to the fixed radars, three portable radars and 300 automaticweather stations will be distributed nationwide. Balochistan will beequipped with 105 weather stations, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 75, Sindh(including Karachi) with 85, and Punjab with 35.

Director General Sahibzad Khan stated that the project, funded by the WorldBank, will provide valuable insights into climate change. The initiative,which will involve both foreign experts and local engineers, is expected tobe completed in three years at an estimated cost of Rs 14 billion ($50million).
