Electricity prices in Pakistan register another massive hike

The recent developments in Pakistan’s electricity sector suggest animpending increase in electricity prices, with the Central Power PurchasingAgency (CPPA) filing an application for tariff adjustment with the NationalElectric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), as reported by ARY News.

This application follows closely after NEPRA’s notification of a Rs4.92 perunit increase in electricity prices. The CPPA’s request specificallytargets a Rs2.94 per unit rise in fuel price adjustment charges for March2024 bills.

NEPRA is expected to schedule a hearing to review the application, afterwhich a decision regarding the proposed tariff hike will be reached.

The recent NEPRA notification on April 8 outlined a Rs4.92 per unitincrease in monthly fuel adjustment charges, applicable to February billsand reflected in April 2024 invoices. Notably, this increase does notaffect consumers of K-Electric and lifeline users.

Additionally, NEPRA had previously approved a Rs2.75 per unit increase inelectricity tariffs nationwide, effective from April, under fuel priceadjustment (FCA). This decision was subsequently forwarded to the federalgovernment for official notification of the tariff adjustment.
