ISLAMABAD: Two police officers embraced martyrdom and four militants werekilled when heavily armed assailants launched a coordinated attack on theChanarik police post in central Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lateSaturday night.
Official sources said the militants opened indiscriminate fire on the postlocated in a sensitive area of the district. The on-duty personnel promptlyretaliated, triggering an intense exchange that lasted for several hours.
During the fierce gun battle, four attackers were shot dead on the spotwhile six others sustained serious injuries. The remaining assailantsmanaged to flee under the cover of darkness.Security forces have recoveredbodies of the slain militants along with weapons and ammunition. A searchoperation has been launched in surrounding areas to trace the injured andescaped attackers.
The martyred officers have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector HayatKhan and Constable Ibrahim Shah. Both belonged to the local police and wereperforming duty at the time of the assault.
In a separate development, three terrorists were killed in a jointoperation conducted by Bannu Police and members of the Hathikhel clan inTarkhe-Oba area falling under Ahmed Zai police station limits onSaturday.The operation was carried out following specific intelligenceregarding presence of wanted militants in the region. Several otherterrorists received injuries during the encounter, officials added.
Security forces have intensified operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa aftera surge in terrorist activities in recent weeks. Authorities maintain thatsuch attacks will not deter their resolve to establish lasting peace.
