ISLAMABAD: A pilot died on Sunday morning after two light aircraft collidedmid-air southwest of Sydney, Australian authorities confirmed. The incidentoccurred around 11:50am near Nepean Field airstrip in Wedderburn,approximately 60 kilometres from the city centre.
Police said four small planes were returning in formation to the privateairstrip when two collided. One aircraft crashed into nearby bushland andburst into flames, killing the pilot instantly. The second aircraft,despite damage, managed to land safely at the airstrip.
Emergency services including police, fire crews and paramedics rushed tothe scene. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the wreckedplane. The surviving pilot received immediate medical assessment but didnot require hospitalisation.
New South Wales Police have established a crime scene and launched aninvestigation. Specialist aviation investigators are examining bothaircraft and interviewing witnesses. Air safety authorities have beennotified to determine the exact cause of the collision.
The fatal crash has raised fresh concerns about safety protocols duringformation flying at private airstrips. Local residents reported hearing aloud explosion followed by plumes of smoke rising from the bushland area.
