Iran Seeks Saudi Style Defence Pact with Pakistan?

ISLAMABAD: Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Councilof Iran, on Wednesday held detailed talks with Field Marshal Syed AsimMunir, Chief of Army Staff, at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi,marking a significant step in bilateral strategic engagement.

The meeting focused on regional security, defence cooperation, and economicpartnership, with both sides expressing commitment to deepen ties amidevolving geopolitical challenges in the Middle East and South Asia.

DTehran has conveyed keen interest in concluding a comprehensive defenceagreement with Islamabad, modelled on the recently strengthened securityarrangement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The proposed accord would reportedly cover joint military exercises,intelligence sharing, defence production collaboration, and coordinatedpositions on regional conflicts, particularly concerning Afghanistan andthe Gulf.

Iranian officials view Pakistan’s growing defence ties with Gulf stateswith cautious optimism and seek formal assurances that such partnershipswill not be directed against Tehran’s core interests.

Both sides also discussed border security mechanisms, counter-terrorismcooperation, and the operationalisation of barter trade protocols agreedduring President Raisi’s visit to Pakistan last year.

The Iranian delegation appreciated Pakistan’s balanced diplomacy in theregion and its efforts to prevent escalation between Iran and Israelfollowing recent tensions.

Military analysts say the talks signal Tehran’s strategic outreach tosecure its eastern flank while Pakistan carefully calibrates relationsbetween Riyadh and Tehran.

No official statement was issued after the meeting, but sources describedthe atmosphere as “cordial and result-oriented.”
