ISLAMABAD: A senior commander of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in southeastern Afghanistan on Monday, security sources confirmed.
The attack took place in Laman Kili area of Bermal district in Paktika province, which borders Pakistan’s tribal regions. Ilyas Badri Mehsud, widely known as Al-Khorasani, and one of his associates were shot dead in a targeted firing incident.
Local sources said the assailants opened fire on the TTP commander and fled the scene immediately. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the killing.
Ilyas Badri had been an active TTP member since 2009 and was considered one of the outfit’s most dangerous operatives. He was directly involved in extortion rackets, bomb blasts, and multiple terrorist attacks inside Pakistan.
Security officials described him as a high-value target who played a central role in planning cross-border attacks against Pakistani forces. His elimination is likely to disrupt TTP operations in the border region.
The killing comes amid growing tensions between the Afghan Taliban and TTP, with several similar incidents reported in eastern Afghanistan over the past year. Analysts believe internal rifts and rivalries may be behind such targeted assassinations.
