Afghanistan deteriorating security situation perturbs US Officials

WASHINGTON: US government’s top watchdog claimed that US reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan are being jeopardized due to deteriorating security situation.

It claimed that Taliban insurgency threatened US gains made by spending billions of dollars in construction aid to Afghanistan.

“The bottom line is too much has been wasted in Afghanistan. Too much money was spent in too small a country with too little oversight,” US official John Sopko, the special inspector-general for Afghanistan reconstruction (SIGAR) said.

“And if the security situation continues to deteriorate, even area where money was spent wisely and gains were made, could be jeopardized,” he added.

Sopko claimed that $113 billion have been appropriated by US Congress for reconstruction in Afghanistan since 2001.

He claimed that the funds were released for reconstruction and other programmes including counter drug trade, establishment of electric power lines, new industries and to modernize the agriculture sector.

Sopko claimed that the planned cut-off in US troops in Afghanistan could increase problems.
