LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Prisons Malik Ahmed Yar Hanjra said on Wednesday that work on a project to build seven new jails across the province was in progress speedily.
“New jails will resolve the issue of over capacity of jail inmates,” he added.
In a brief conversation with APP at his office, he said, land for construction of jails had already been acquired. “We are contemplating various options for getting land including state land which can save cost of setting up the jails,” he said.
He said for prisoner’s rehabilitation, a programme had already been launched for technical training of jail inmates.
He said the department put in place measures to ensure possible surveillance and intelligence collection of those hardened criminals who were involved in terrorism and other heinous criminal activities.
The Minister said, physical infrastructure of jails had been improved as Public Call Offices (PCOs), water filtration plants and other facilities had been installed in various jails. (APP)
