NEW DELHI – Fueling a Submarine Arms Race in the region, India has launchedthe third of its six Scorpene-class submarines in Mumbai.
Indian Navy officials said the submarine named “INS Karanj” will undergo ayear-long tests before it is commissioned.
The Navy officials said the Scorpene submarines can undertake multifarioustypes of missions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare,intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.
India has been vary of the Pakistan and Chinese Navies operations in theIndian Ocean and has previously raised serious concerns over the issue.
