British PM Theresa May visits mosque in solidarity with Muslims

LONDON – British Prime Minister Theresa May is visiting London’s FinsburyPark Mosque, meeting with members of a community trying to come to termswith an attack in which a van barreled into a crowd of worshippers leavingRamadan prayers.

May met with representatives from a variety of faiths only hours after theincident early Monday. She has praised the bravery of members of the publicwho detained the driver of a van that plowed into a crowd of worshippersoutside a London mosque.

The German government is also offering its condolences. Chancellor AngelaMerkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Monday that the government’ssympathy goes to the victims and their relatives, the London mosquecommunity and “all our friends in London and Britain who are barely able tofind peace at the moment.”

Seibert calls the attack “an act of blind hatred – and that would give it aplace in the terrorist acts of recent weeks and months.”

The chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque and other faith leaders in Londonheld a moment of silence for the victims around 1p.m. local time Monday.

After the silence, Mohammed Kozbar read a brief statement declaring that an”an attack on one faith is an attack on all faiths.”

Kozbar was surrounded by leaders of other faiths in the community and byLabour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is the local member of Parliamentfor the area.

Ten people were injured in the early Monday attack on worshippers comingout of the Finsbury Park Mosque in London.

A 48-year-old white man has been arrested and charged with attempted murderand police say they’re investigating it as a terror attack. Ten people havebeen injured. A man who was being given first aid at the time died at thescene, but it’s not clear if he died as a direct result of the attack.
