Why Supreme Court has ordered authorities not to arrest SSP Rao Anwar

ISLAMABAD – Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday not to arrest the former MalirSenior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar and granted him protectivebail while directing him to appear before the court on Friday.

According to local media reports, during the court proceedings, ChiefJustice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar also ordered the formation ofJoint Investigation Team (JIT) regarding the ‘extra judicial murder’ ofNaqeebullah Mehsud.

The court also maintained that Anwar should be provided security till theJIT completes its probe. These directives came after the former SSP wrote aletter to the CJP.

The case was heard by a three-member bench headed by the CJP. InspectorGeneral of Sindh Police AD Khawaja was also present during the hearing.

The former SSP is in hiding ever since he tried to flee the country lastmonth. He is wanted in the ‘extra judicial murder’ of 27-year-oldNaqeebullah, a native of Waziristan. He was killed, along with three othersuspected terrorists, on January 13 in an alleged encounter with a policeteam headed by Anwar.

However, Naqeebullah’s family has claimed that the deceased was innocentand was killed in a ‘fake’ encounter.
