Pakistan – Afghanistan to hold government to government level talks

KABUL – Calling for Pakistan to hold government-to-government talks,Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani said on Wednesday that they wantto forget the past and start a new chapter with the country.

Speaking at the 2nd Kabul Process Conference, Ghani also proposed aceasefire and called on the Taliban to take part in peace talks to save thecountry, Afghan media* TOLO News* reported. The conference was attended byrepresentatives from more than 25 countries including Pakistan and membersfrom international organizations.

Ghani also offered to recognize the Taliban insurgents as a legitimatepolitical group. He added that Afghan government will provide security forthose Taliban who join the peace process.

Ghani announced that the government will provide passports to Talibanmembers and their families. They will also work to remove sanctions againstTaliban leaders.

Afghan president a day before the meeting on Twitter had said that he willbe presenting a detailed peace offer to Taliban and Pakistan on behalf ofthe Afghan people in the conference. “We wish to march towards a lastingpeace in Afghanistan and in the region!”

Thanking the delegates from all the countries, Ghani said, “Your presencehere is a visible reminder that we are an international community unitednot only by shared threats, but shared interests and shared opportunities.”
