Elections 2018 likely to get delayed: Report

ISLAMABAD: Election 2018 may get delayed as both government and theopposition have severely objected to initial delimitation issued by theElection Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The ECP on March 5 issued the initial delimitation of national andprovincial assemblies on the basis of the population census carried outlate last year.

ECP has assured that final delimitation will be complete by May 5 andelections would be held on time. However analysts believe that subsequentpetitions in High Courts and appeals in Supreme Court over delimitation mayprolong the matter.

A special parliamentary committee, headed by Deputy Speaker NationalAssembly Murtaza Javed and formed to mull over the issue, rejected theinitial draft and said delimitation should be according to voter lists.

Peshawar is no longer NA-1, and the number has been allocated to Chitral

Delimitation in various constituencies have not been done in a clockwisefashion starting from the north, the committee said.

ECP secretary in his briefing to the committee said delimitation was doneaccording to law. He admitted that there could be errors and assured thelawmakers that they will be done away with.
