*KARACHI: Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)Yukiya Amano appreciated Pakistan for employing the most advanced safetyfeatures for its nuclear reactors.*
The UN atomic energy chief visited the K-2 and K-3 nuclear power plants inthe city on Wednesday. He later addressed the seminar on “The Peaceful Usesof Nuclear Energy and Pakistan”, organised by the Center for InternationalStrategic Studies (CISS) and the Pakistan Institute of InternationalAffairs (PIIA) to highlight the importance of nuclear energy in Pakistan’seconomic development.
Mr. Yukiya Amano said that Pakistan had a long history of cooperation withthe IAEA, starting with the inception of the agency itself in 1957.Pakistan’s cooperation with the agency had been reciprocal, wherein theinternational agency had also greatly benefitted from Pakistan’s nuclearexpertise and its human resources.
He further said that Pakistan had been a beneficiary of IAEA assistance andits government was fully committed to enhance its collaboration with theagency in diverse fields, ranging from nuclear power development to that ofhuman health, agriculture and livestock.
He said that Pakistan had conceptualised and developed an intensiveprogramme for peaceful uses of nuclear energy, which offered greatopportunities. Pakistan was fully committed to IAEA’s objectives, he added.
“I am very impressed to see that Pakistan has taken all possible nuclearsafety and security measures,” he said and added that the reactors hadadvanced safety features.
He also appreciated that Pakistan’s enhancement of crop yield in the fieldof agriculture.
IAEA DG mentioned that Pakistan and IAEA had a mutually beneficial and wideranging cooperation.
