NEW DELHI – A Jodhpur court on Thursday found the actor guilty of huntingtwo blackbucks while working on the film Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1998.
The court further acquitted Salman’s co-actors Sonali Bendre, Saif AliKhan, Neelam and Tabu.
According to media reports, the actor was given a two-year jail term.However, contrary to media reports, the public prosecutor said that theyhave asked for the maximum punishment (of six years) and that the quantumis yet to be pronounced.
According to reports, Salman’s lawyer has pleaded for minimum sentence. Ifthe court pronounces more than three years in prison for the actor, he willhave to approach a higher court for bail but if it is less than threeyears, the actor can apply for bail in the same court immediately.
Salman was accused of killing two blackbucks on October 2, 1998 in Kankanivillage in Jodhpur.
The case had been in trial for the past 19 years with the conviction given,that if found guilty, Salman would be charged under Section 51 of theWildlife (Protection) Act, and may face six years in prison.
The blackbuck is an endangered species and is protected under the IndianWildlife Act.
