Indian spectators hurl shoes at foreign players during IPL match

NEW DELHI – Three Indians were detained for hurling shoes inside theChepauk stadium, Chennai, during an ongoing Indian Premier League betweenthe Chennai and Kolkata sides on Tuesday.

Kolkata were batting in the game against when a few shoes were hurled fromthe upper tier of the stands opposite to the main pavilion.

The unidentified protestors hurled shoes at Ravindra Jadeja, Faf Du Plessisand Lungi Ngidi were taking a stroll.

A couple of shoes also fell on the stands below, according to reports.

The protesters, who were also carrying a red flag against rules, wereremoved from the ground by the police, said the report quoting localorganisers.

NTK, a Tamil nationalist party in the state, which among other protesters,is demanding a boycott of the IPL matches in Chennai until the Cauverywater issues is solved.

The political parties in the state have been protesting against theCentre’s negligence in the formation of Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

Earlier in the day IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla also met Union Home SecretaryRajeev Gauba and demanded enhanced security arrangements during the matchesin Chennai.

IPL has returned to Chepauk stadium after two years where the homefranchise Chennai Super Kings are taking on Kolkata Knight Riders in thefifth match of the 2018 fixture.

Chennai on Tuesday saw massive protests against the conduct of IPL matchesamid raging Cauvery demonstrations, with police chasing away agitators insome places. One incident of agitators burning yellow jerseys, the attireof Chennai Super Kings players, was also reported.

Hundreds of activists of pro-Tamil outfits like Tamizhaga VazhvurimaiKatchi (TVK), Naam Tamizhar, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and someMuslim groups staged road blockade at the arterial Anna Salai and TTKSalai, affecting traffic movement, police said.

In some places, protesters clashed with police.
