Rahat Fateh Ali Khan lands into trouble

KARACHI : Pakistani singer ‘Sohail Shahzad’ has announced filing a caseagainst Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for plagiarising his 2013 hit Naina in the2016 Indian Punjabi film Tiger. Shahzad expressed that he had sued ‘Rahat’and the Indian record label as well.

He told that “I got to know that the song has been copied back in 2016 whenpeople started commenting and sharing it with me on social media,” he said.“I’m a fan of Happy Raikoti, the lyricist of Rabba, the copied version. SoI emailed the Indian record label, explaining the situation to them, butdidn’t get a response.”

On whether it’s logical to file a case against Khan, as he is not thecomposer (Laddi Gill is), Shahzad said that because using the Indian recordlabel meant they must have a representative in India to handle thelegalities, it would make the process difficult. “We are givingRahat Sahab the notice so his team can approach the record label becausethey will obviously contact him, and so that we can establish a link. Iknow for sure they would have known of this song before.”

Sohail is all set to fight for his song’s plagiarism and he expressed that“Art and music are not even considered a profession here so nobody caresfor copyrights. We should know how to secure its legal rights and take itseriously as a profession. Back in the day, I’m sure they had paperwork tomake sure songs don’t get stolen,” continued Shahzad.

He also Said “But, as far as I see, for the last 10-15 years, nobody hascared. With this campaign, my intention is to make musicians more aware ofintellectual property theft. We need to take care of this. This is ourbread and butter.” We hope that the matter get resolve and both the singersdon’t develop a bad taste for each other.
