Dawn Leaks issue was an international agenda, says Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon

*LONDON – Chief Executive Officer of Dawn Media Group Hameed Haroon hasconceded that the Dawn leak issue was an international agenda, he saidwhile giving an interview to BBC.*

When interviewer Stephen Sackur asked Mr Haroon about his recent write-upin a foreign media outlet in which he said there is an unprecedentedassault by military on freedom of press, he said:

“This has been about two years in the making, but in the last three monthsthe intensification is major. All attempts have been made to mop upcritical and independent media.”

The interviewer contradicted him, saying, “But Dawn’s still publishing andable to give an independent voice to the coverage of elections.

This notion of yours that something truly critical to the future ofdemocracy seems to be flying in the face of evidence on the ground and I’mreminded of that phrase in the English language Never make perfect theenemy of good.

May be things aren’t perfect in Pakistan’s democracy today but if they arebetter than they have been in the past maybe that’s what celebrating.”

At this, Mr Haroon said, “It would be wrong to say that things are betterthan they would have been in the past. One could dangerously assume thatthings are not as bad as they might be.”
