Iran hits out at India over Chabahar Port

TEHRAN – Iran has criticised India for delays in the investments indeveloping project of the Chabahar Port, Financial Tribune daily reportedon Thursday.

“It is unfortunate that Indian investment promises for the development ofChabahar Port and its connectivity projects have not been accomplishedyet,” said Iran’s Deputy Ambassador and Charge d’Affaires to New Delhi,Masoud Rezvanian Rahaqi.

“India is expected to take immediate and necessary measures in this regardif its cooperation and engagement in Chabahar Port are of strategicnature,” he was quoted as saying.

Rahaqi was speaking at a seminar here on the impact of challenges on Iran’sties with India.

In February, Iran and India signed agreements with focus on the developmentand utilisation of Iran’s strategic Chabahar Port.

According to the agreement, Iran awarded the operation of its southernport, Shahid Beheshti port, to India, a move that could enable India tododge Pakistan and reach markets in Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.

Based on the deal, Iran agreed to grant the operational control of ShahidBeheshti in Chabahar port city to India for 18 months.
