Diamer Bhasha Dam funds: CJP Justice Saqib Nisar kicks off yet another initiative

LAHORE – Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar is going to kick offyet another initiative for the Diamer Bhasha dams funds.

He has accepted an invitation from the World Congress of OverseasPakistanis to visit the United Kingdom and other European countries tospread awareness among the overseas Pakistanis on the ongoing water crisisand generate funds for the building of new dams.

The top judge was invited by the the Executive Director of World Congressof Overseas Pakistanis Arif Anis after delivering the landmark judgement onFriday through which the Supreme Court permitted overseas Pakistanis tocast vote in the upcoming by-polls. This would be the first time that expatPakistanis will be voting in a local election through I-voting mechanism.

The judgement was issued by a three-judge bench headed by the CJP himselfwhich was hearing petitions at the apex court’s Lahore registry. Dr FarhatSiddiqui, along with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan andothers through solicitor Muhammad Dawood Ghazanvi, sought voting rights foroverseas Pakistanis.

The petitioners had also asked the court to order the ECP to implement its2014 judgment in which arrangements for overseas Pakistanis had beenordered for their fundamental right as guaranteed by the Constitution.

Anis, who was representing the overseas Pakistanis, thanked chief justiceNisar on behalf of the expatriates for their right to vote and requestedhim to visit the UK, Europe and the US for collection of funds forconstruction of dams in the country.
