Afghan military soldiers surrender before Taliban as yet another key district falls

KABUL – Bilcheragh district of the Faryan province collapsedto the Taliban on Saturday night.

According to sources, the district has faced numerous threats recently andeventually fell to the Taliban – due to the lack of assistance andreinforcement troops, TOLO News has reported.

Sources said about 100 security force members had been in the district atthe time – of whom nearly 40 have surrendered to the Taliban.

“The soldiers fought until they had no more bullets; they willsurrender only when they have used all bullets; they finished their bulletsand were forced to surrender and the district collapsed,” Fawzia Raufi, anMP from Faryab said.

The Interior Ministry’s spokesman Najib Danish meanwhile said communicationlines were cut at about midnight on Saturday in the area – alsowith Bilcheragh police headquarters and so far theyhave no news on the fateof the security forces there.

“From 12pm last night our connection was lost with the police headquarters.We are trying to establish connection, but we do not have furtherinformation about them,” said Danish.

Meanwhile a number of Faryab provincial council members said otherdistricts in the province are also facing security threats.

“Taliban is trying to collapse Gurziwan district, but securityforces in the district are motivated,” Sebghatullah Silab, deputy head ofthe provincial council said.
