ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Dr Arif Alvi was elected as the13th president of Pakistan with clear majority.
Out of 432 votes cast by members of the National Assembly and Senate, Alvisecured 212 votes while opposition’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman bagged 131votes. Pakistan Peoples Party’s Aitzaz Ahsan managed 81 votes while eightvotes were rejected.
Voting via a secret ballot commenced simultaneously in all assemblies andthe Senate at 10am, and concluded around 4pm. Chief Justice of PeshawarHigh Court Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth began counting the votes, each vote isbeing scrutinised to ensure has put marks on the vote.
President-elect Alvi spoke to the media following the preliminary resultsand said thanked PM Imran Khan for considering him for the position. “Ipray I get the chance to serve this post in its true spirit. Our governmenthas a message of serving the masses. I am not the president of PTI alone, Iam the president of all parties and all Pakistanis.”
“I am thankful to the nation and our workers and supporters. I will try tobe the president of all parties. I am thankful to the independents and ourpartners in allied government.”
