In a big diplomatic victory, Pakistan becomes member of IAEA

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has once again been elected as member of board ofgovernors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the next twoyears, Radio Pakistan reported on Thursday.

A Pakistani delegation led by Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy CommissionMuhammad Naeem also attended the IAEA’s meeting where the election was heldin Vienna, Austria.

Being elected as a member of the IAEA’s board of governors is a majordiplomatic achievement for Pakistan. The election represents recognition ofthe country’s status as a responsible nuclear power state.

Out of its 35 members, 11 are elected to the IAEA’s board of governors fora term of two years.

The IAEA is an international organisation that seeks to promote thepeaceful use of nuclear energy, and inhibit its use for any militarypurpose, including nuclear weapons.

With its headquarters in Vienna, the IAEA reports to both the UnitedNations General Assembly and Security Council
