Indian troops crackdown at Muharram processions in Occupied Kashmir, dozens arrested

SRINAGAR – In occupied Kashmir, Indian police arrested dozens of mournersamidst violent action on Muharram processions and anti-India demonstrationsin different areas of Srinagar, today (Wednesday).

Indian troops, police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strengthacross Srinagar to stop the processions. Coils of razor-fitted wire wereplaced on the main roads to prevent vehicular movement.

However, hundreds of people including members of Tehreek-e-Wahdat-e-Islamidefying restrictions tried to march from Batamaloo towards Shaheed Gunj inSrinagar. Police intercepted the marchers by resorting to baton charge andteargas shelling.

Dozens of mourners including Nisar Hussain Rathar, Syed Imtiaz Haider, AliMuhammad Rathar, Syed Muzaffar Rizvi and Fayyaz Ahmad Butt were arrested.Schools and colleges were closed in Srinagar in view of processions.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, whileaddressing APHC Advisory Council meeting in Srinagar has said that theright to self-determination is the only democratic and peaceful option fora permanent resolution to the Kashmir dispute. He urged people to stay awayfrom the election drama being staged by India to mislead the internationalcommunity.

The Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement saidthat the authorities are using insurance as a bait to entice people tocontest the upcoming sham local bodies’ elections.

Meanwhile, Kashmiri representative Barrister Abdul Majid Tramboo whileaddressing the 39th Session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva lashed outat Indian authorities for holding farcical local bodies’ elections inoccupied Kashmir. He said that the ground situation was totally contrary towhat is being portrayed to international community through such mockexercise
