ECC meeting held: Electricity Prices rise come under discussion

*ISLAMABAD – The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinetmeeting was held in Islamabad which mulled over the issue of rise inelectricity prices in Pakistan.*

*ECC meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Asad Umar.*

*ECC has once again deferred its decision to hike the electricity prices,during a meeting on Monday.*

As per local media reports, the ECC will sit again in a special session onOctober 24. The ECC members were expected to accord approval for anincrease of Rs2.04 per unit in the price of electricity.

During the meeting, the finance minster called for strict measures in orderto curb electricity theft. The minister also stressed on the improvement inthe billing mechanism and said that the government will not increase ratesuntil the bill payment system is improved.

He added that the committee will not increase the rates by a huge margin,if it needed to do so. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority(Nepra) had earlier proposed to increase the electricity rate by Rs3.82 perunit.
