PTI government faces yet another setback

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf government faces yet another setbackas the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has rejected the draftgovernment law over media authority.

CPNE has rejected the proposal of the merger of all regulatory authoritiesinto one top body to be called the Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority.

A joint statement issued on Saturday by CPNE President Arif Nizami, SeniorVice President Imtinan Shahid and Secretary General Dr Jabbar Khattak, sayssuch steps have led to the spread of fear and perplexity throughout thePakistani print, electronic and digital media.

The statement says that through the proposed law, excuses have been offeredto curb freedom of the press and freedom of expression; hinder the people’sright to information; cultivate government influence and strict control.
