GB provincial status: Federal cabinet takes the final decision

ISLAMABAD – The federal cabinet on Thursday has taken the final decisionover the issue of special provincial status for Gilgit Baltistan.

Cavubet refused to accept a summary to make Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) a specialprovisional province, as proposed by a high-level committee constituted bythe government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Although the PTI had criticised the previous government of Pakistan MuslimLeague-Nawaz (PML-N) for introducing the GB Order 2018 and called itinsufficient to provide fundamental rights to the area locals, the rulingparty outrightly rejected the possibility of introducing any amendment inthe constitution needed to give GB a representation in National Assemblyand Senate, a well-informed source told *Pakistan Today*.

According to the source, Prime Minister Imran Khan was the first to opposethe proposed reforms in the GB, saying that the same will undermine theKashmir dispute and Pakistan’s international obligations.

“Since major reforms have been rejected by the cabinet, GB will be governedthrough a presidential order,” said the source, adding that the governmentmay later try to give more rights to the area while remaining within theambit of the order.
