ISLAMABAD – State Minister for Interior Shehryar Khan Afridi is under firefrom government for speaking against Saudi Arabia.
Afridi reportedly spoke against Saudi Arabia in a meeting with PresidentInternational Islamic University, Islamabad Dr Ahmed Yousif Al-Draiweesh.
Afridi had to pay the cost of his utterance against the Saudi government somuch that intervention was made at the Prime Minister level and he wasasked to pay a visit to Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki toapologise to him. Consequently, Afridi visited Saudi ambassador to clarifyhis position.
Saudi Arabia was the first country that last month promised to give thePTI-led government a bailout package worth $6 billion to help Pakistanavert a default-like situation.
Last month, IIUI President Dr Ahmed Yousif Al-Draiweesh along with ViceIIUI President Dr Tahir Khalily and some of the senior faculty members helda scheduled meeting with the state minister for interior at the Ministry ofInterior. The purpose was to discuss the issue of the delays in visas’extensions to the foreign students and visa issues of other studentsstudying at the IIUI.
During the meeting, Afridi raised the issue of Pakistani prisonerslanguishing in Saudi jails and told the IIUI president, who is a Saudinational and is a nominee of Saudi Arabia, to convey his reservations tothe Saudi government about the bad treatment meted out to Pakistaniprisoners there.
