NAB takes strong exception of the Accountability Court verdict in Flagship reference

ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken a strongexception to the Accountability Court verdict in the Flagship referencecase against Nawaz Sharif.

NAB has decided to challenge former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s acquittalin Flagship reference.

The decision was taken in a meeting presided over by NAB chairman Justice(r) Javed Iqbal at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters inIslamabad. Senior legal experts, concerned director generals and seniorofficials attended the meeting.

The meeting after detailed consultation decided to challenge theaccountability court verdict, while Justice (r) Javed Iqbal directed thelegal experts file a petition after reviewing the judgement in Flagshipreference.

While reading out the short order, Accountability Judge Arshad Malik today(Monday) said there was no case against Nawaz in the Flagship reference.

In Al-Azizia reference, he was sentenced to seven years in prison forcorruption. The conviction, centred on family businesses in the MiddleEast, is his second stemming from a corruption investigation spurred by thePanama Papers leak, and comes as new Prime Minister Imran Khan has vowed totackle endemic graft in Pakistan.

Sharif, a three-time prime minister, has denied all the charges against him.

He was taken into custody and will be sent to Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore,and was also fined 3.47 billion rupees ($25 million).
