ISLAMABAD – Director General World Health Organization (WHO) Dr TedrosAdhanom Ghebreyesus on Tuesday said WHO had intensified its activities incoordination with the government of Pakistan for polio eradication, as aresult the infectious disease from Pakistan would likely be eliminated byend of this year.He stated this while talking to Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah MahmoodQureshi.He was accompanied by WHO’s Regional Director for the Eastern MediterraneanRegion Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari and President of the Bill and Melinda GatesFoundation’s Global Development Division Dr. Christopher Elias.Dr Tedros Adhanom briefed the Foreign Minister on WHO’s enhanced focus onpublic health, country-levelimpacts, ongoing programmes/projects in Pakistan aimed at improvingpeople’s access to health related matters.He reiterated that WHO would continue its support to the efforts ofGovernment of Pakistan to improvehealthcare in the country.Foreign Minister Qureshi, welcoming the Director General and his delegationto Pakistan, saidWHO had been playing an important role in the health sector of Pakistan.
With regards to polio eradication efforts by the Government, the ForeignMinister emphasized thatcollaborative efforts at national, provincial and local levels would helpeliminate the disease and made Pakistan azero polio country.
Foreign Minister reiterated that the government remained committed toensure provision of quality healthfacilities to people at all levels.
He assured the delegation of full support in polio eradication andimplementation of other healthprogrammes in Pakistan in the days to come. – APP
