US President Donald Trump breaks silence over peace talks with Afghan Taliban

WASHINGTON – The U.S. President Donald Trump has hailed the ongoingnegotiations with the Taliban group to end the war in Afghanistan.

“Negotiations are proceeding well in Afghanistan after 18 years offighting. Fighting continues but the people of Afghanistan want peace inthis never ending war,” President Trump said in a Twitter post.

This comes as efforts are underway to revive direct peace talks between theAfghan government and Taliban group leaders to end the ongoing violence inthe country.

The U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation AmbassadorKhalilzad had earlier said that significant progress has been made on vitalissues during the 6-day talks with Taliban political leaders in Qatar.

However, he said a number of issues are still left to work out, emphasizingthat he will build on the momentum and resume talks shortly.
