Water war would be dangerous, Pakistan tells India through diplomatic channels

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has told India that water war could be dangerous forthe whole region, officials said.

Pakistan had contacted India through the diplomatic channels after thelatest statement by an Indian minister on water flow and warned againstescalating the tension further.

“India cannot stop Pakistan’s water. We have told them that suchirresponsible statements could be dangerous for the whole region and shouldbe best avoided,” one official said.

Another official said India had issued such statements a number of times inthe past but failed to stop Pakistan’s water. “They cannot do it. Thereare international rules to be followed. India can’t take such decisions byitself,” he added.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi meanwhile urged the World Bank totake notice of Indian threats to stop the flow of water into the country.

He said that India gave an irresponsible statement regarding stopping theflow of water into Pakistan, adding that he had given reference to theissue in his letter to the UN chief.

“World Bank is a guarantor of the Indus Water Treaty between Pakistan andIndian,” he said.

Earlier, India threatened to isolate Pakistan on the international leveland then claimed it would stop the flow of water into the country. IndianMinister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari said the government led by PrimeMinister Narendra Modi had taken the decision to block the water flow toPakistan.
