Chinese Naval fleet docks at Karachi Port

BEIJING – A Chinese naval fleet has joined the multinational AMAN-19maritime exercise being conducted in Karachi with an aim to promotemaritime exchanges and cooperation among the participating countries andjointly enhance their capabilities to deal with maritime security threats.

China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Malaysia,Sri Lanka, Turkey, Oman, and other countries have sent ships, aircraft orspecial forces to participate in the five-day exercise which will continuetill February 12, according to Chinese defense ministry statement issuedhere.

The exercise, organized by Pakistan Navy has two major phases includingharbor and sea phase. Harbor activities would include seminars,discussions, and demonstrations.

A three-day International Maritime Conference will also be held on thetopic of “Global Geopolitics in Transition: Rethinking Maritime Dynamics inthe Indian Ocean Region.” The navies will do practical exercise in the seaduring the sea phase.

AMAN series of multinational exercises were started in 2007 with a view topromoting regional cooperation and stability, greater interoperability, anddisplaying a united resolve against terrorism and crimes in the maritimedomain including piracy.

It is the 7th such exercise being held in the Arabian Sea off-shores ofPakistan’s Karachi.
