MOSCOW – The Moscow talks on peace in Afghanistan, between Afghanpoliticians and Taliban members were held on Tuesday.
Opening remarks by former president Hamid Karzai, and Taliban delegationleader Abbas Stanakzai, were streamed live on social media – in a starkbreak from previous talks.
Karzai’s speech lasted about five minutes and saw the former presidentdrive home the need for peace and unity in the country.
Stanakzai however spoke a lot longer and also outlined the group’sstrategies for peace, governance, health, women’s rights, developmentprojects and on reducing civilian casualties.
Stanakzai said Afghanistan’s Constitution was illegitimate and had beenforced on Afghans by foreigners. He also said the Constitution was a majorobstacle to peace.
