Only 3,000 Judges for 22 crore Pakistanis with a backlog of 1.9 million cases: CJP

ISLAMABAD – More than 1.9 million cases are pending in courts because of ashortage of judges, says Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.

He said the country only has 3,000 judges for a population of more than 220million people. He said 25% of judges’ vacancies in the country stillhaven’t been filled.

The CJ made these remarks during the proceedings of a civil case at theapex court.

He said pending cases would be wrapped up once the appointment of judgeswas complete.

In the last year, 3.1 million cases were wrapped up, the top judge said. Ofthese, 26,000 were wrapped up by the Supreme Court. He said courts were notat fault for the high number of pending cases.
