ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted for hearing the NationalAccountability Bureau’s plea challenging a Lahore High Court decision togrant bail to Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif andformer principal secretary to PM Fawad Hassan Fawad in the Ashiana HousingScheme case.
A three-member bench led by Justice Azmat Saeed heard the appeal, submittedby NAB counsel Naeem Bukhari, the Radio Pakistan reported.
The court issued notices to Shahbaz Sharif and Fawad Hassan Fawad andadjourned the hearing till second of the next month.
NAB has filed a corruption reference against Fawad and others over theiralleged involvement in the scam.
The anti-corruption watchdog had also arrested the Pakistan Muslim League-Npresident in connection with the housing scam.
The Bureau has alleged that the Rs14 billion contract for the housingscheme was won by a construction company called Chaudhry Latif and Sons,but the then Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and his aides had awardedit to “ineligible” Lahore Casa Developers.
Due to the alleged illegal cancellation of the contract, the government hadto pay damages to the contractor. The cancellation of the contract had alsodelayed the project, resulting in a cost escalation of billions of rupees.
