ISLAMABAD- National Transport Research Centre (NTRC) Tuesday organized thefirst interactive thematic dialogue on Pakistan’s Possible Adoption of ADR,a European Treaty for Transportation of Dangerous Goods on Roads’ held herebetween Freight Transporter Associations & Oil Tanker Bodies and otherrelevant public & private stakeholders.
Secretary Ministry of Communications Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui chaired thediscussion and appraised that more than 50 per cent of the goods transporton roads fall under the category of Dangerous Goods.
He underscored the fact that Pakistan was being developed as transit routefor trade of land locked Central Asian Republics where the transit would bemainly transported by road due to non-existence of rail network withCentral Asian Republics.
“For this purpose, National Regulations for Transportation of DangerousGoods by Road needs to be harmonized with international regulations bypossible adoption of ADR,” he added.
He also elaborated that Federal Minister for Communications is keen tomodernize the transport sector for better regional connectivity with asafer road system in Pakistan.
Presenters from industry (Autocom, ADCR & Finite Engineering) shared thecompliance and non-compliance statistics of oil tankers and trucks andtheir impact on safer road system.The transporter association also actively participated in the event andensured full support in policy making and its adoption.
NTRC Chief Hameed Akhtar in his concluding remarks said, “It is a firststep towards formulation of Rules & Laws on Transportation of DangerousGoods on Roads.” NTRC would further continue its active role to achieve thedesired goals under ADR with the consultation of all stakeholders includingtransporter associations, industry and other regulatory authorities.
He also emphasized that Pakistan was going to compete with developed worldby signing Trade Agreements with all neighboring countries; therefore,there was a dire need for aligning our national regulations oninternational standards. This would be only possible with the support ofall actors engaged in transportation of dangerous goods in the country,Hameed said.
