US embassy issues statement after Zalmay Khalilzad visit to Islamabad

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and the United States have discussed ways to unlockopportunities for regional economic integration and development throughpeace in Afghanistan.

A statement issued by the US embassy on the conclusion of two-day visit ofUS Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzadon Saturday, says both sides looked in depth as to how the peace inAfghanistan will benefit Pakistan as well.

It further said Special Representative Khalilzad met with Foreign MinisterShah Mehmood Qureshi, Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, and Chief of ArmyStaff General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

In his meetings, Ambassador Khalilzad thanked the Pakistani leaders fortheir assistance in facilitating the travel of the Taliban’s negotiatingteam.

The statement added that the United States looks to Pakistan to continueplaying a positive role in supporting the peace process.
