ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Chief Justice of Pakistan(CJP) Saqib Nisar performed on Thursday the groundbreaking of the MohmandDam.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Chief of Army Staff GeneralQamar Javed Bajwa, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Khyber PakhtunkhwaGovernor Shah Farman and KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and FederalMinister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Dr Noor-ul-Haq Qadrialong with other officials.
The dam has the capacity of storing about 1.2 million acres feet (MAF) ofwater. Mohmand dam on completion will generate 800 megawatt electricity andwill bring about 16,000 acres barren land under cultivation.
It will also solve the problem of water scarcity in Mohmand besides savingPeshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera districts from floods. According to theSBP data, the fund has so far raised Rs. 10,402,081,797. Mohmand Dam whichis being constructed on Swat River, will be completed by 2024.
Last year, the former CJP took the initiative of collecting donations toovercome the country’s water scarcity. He was then joined by the primeminister and the fund was called the Supreme Court of Pakistan and thePrime Minister of Pakistan Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand Dams Fund.
