UNITED NATIONS – The chief of Jaish-e-Muhammad, Masood Azhar was declaredglobal terrorist by the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday.
The development came as China lifted its hold on the proposal to blacklistAzhar who is now in UN Sanctions list. The tag will subject Azhar to anassets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo.
Just a day earlier, Beijing had said that the vexed issue of designatingAzhar as a global terrorist by the U.N. will be “properly resolved”. Indiahad been trying to list Azhar as a global terrorist from last ten years, however, China was blocking the bid.
In March, China had put a technical hold on the proposal to blacklist Azharafter France moved a resolution. Beijing had said it needed more time to“study” the matter but added that it was “sincere” about cementing tieswith India.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson, Dr Faisal said Masood Azhar hadbeen proscribed under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism act for some time evenbefore his case for listing was taken up by the sanctions committee.
