Haramain High Speed Rail Project represents one of the most important transport projects in Saudi Arabia

RIYADH – Haramain High-Speed Rail project represents one of the mostimportant transport projects in the expansion programme of the Saudilink railway network.

The launching of a 450-km electric-rail track with an operational speed of300 Km per hour, the Haramain High-speed Rail, HHR, aims to cater topassengers wishing to travel link betweenthe holy cities of Makkahlink and Madinahconnecting them to the King Abdullah Economic City, Jeddahlink and the Jeddahlink Airportlink.

The trains are equipped with the latest signalling and communicationssystem. It is primarily designed to provide a fastlink, comfortable,reliable and safe mode of transport, between the holy cities whileutilising state-of-the-art technologies.

Construction on the project began in Marchlink 2009, and it wasofficially inaugurated on 25th Septemberlink, 2018link. The line was openedto the public on 11th Octoberlink, 2018link, with the first twotrains, each carrying 417 passengers.

According to the Saudilink TransportMinister and General Transport Authority Chairman, Nabil Al-Amoudi, therailway is expected to carry 60 millionlink passengers a year,including around three to four millionlink Hajjlink and Umrah pilgrims,helping to relieve trafficlink on theroads in a 120-minute journey between the two holy cities.
