ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan says the government will constructfive million housing units in the next five years to cater the housingneeds of low income and salaried class.
He was addressing the ceremony of signing a Memorandum of Understandingbetween Pakistan and United Nations Office for Project Services andSustainable Housing Solutions for financial assistance in Naya PakistanHousing Programme in Islamabad today.
He said that there is a shortage of 12.5 million housing units in thecountry and Naya Pakistan Housing programme will provide an opportunity tolow income people to own their houses.
He said that signing of MoU with UNOPS will not only provide financialassistance but it will bring expertise to Pakistan. He said that in orderto promote mortgage the government has enacted foreclosure laws in thecountry.
The prime minister said UNOPS decision to start the program from Gwadar forfishermen is a landmark. He said forty industries are directly related tothe construction industry and Naya Pakistan Housing programme will boostall these industries.
He said that local material and labour will be used in construction ofthese houses to boost the economy. He said that a one window operation isbeing introduced for the Naya Pakistan Housing programme.
Speaking on the occasion Minister for Housing and Works Tariq Bashir Cheemasaid Naya Pakistan Housing program will not only build houses but it willalso create jobs for public.
Meanwhile, chairing a meeting to review the progress on Naya PakistanHousing Project in Islamabad, Imran Khan has said that Naya PakistanHousing Project will not only provide housing to the homeless people butwill promote construction-related industries and provide employmentopportunities for youth.
The prime minister said the government wants to provide housing facility tothe low income and salaried class.
During the meeting Prime Minister was given detailed briefing on theprogress on the Naya Pakistan Housing project.
